Visual Argument – Rough pictures
Here are the pictures I took for the early stages of the visual argument I am putting together. The purpose of this argument is to show how graffiti can be art as well and how the artist expresses themselves through this medium. I hope you enjoy the pictures. Please leave a comment with constructive criticism if you have something to say. I really look forward to getting into the heart of this project.

I’m definatelly showing this to my best friend when its finished she loves “painting” on old abandon buildings to give them a more appealing look. She has gotten me in to this new and emerging underground art.
I like your idea a lot. Most people think of graffiti as just mess to be cleaned up, but if you think about it, a lot of it has a definite subject and message its getting across.
I look forward to seeing the finished presentation! One graffiti artist in Columbus signs his/her art with a circle and a “V” in its center. (In case you were hoping to find more examples… V impresses me – Banski-esque.) One concern: the color in your third photograph seems to have lost vibrancy due to the bright lighting. But – I am not sure where you are going with it! Good luck.
The art in the first picture is really great, and all three give you a nice amount of content to express your argument well. The glare in the third picture is kind of distracting, but that can be easily fixed in Photoshop and I’m sure you were planning to do so anyway.
Interesting idea. I think maybe some more images of Graffiti, like a mural
I think that’s cool. There’s a lot of graffiti everywhere and people see it in all places and all sorts all the time.
i like these pictures but how do you plan on taking these 3 and making them into one? its amazing what people can do with just a can of spray paint and its really good art. Your argument is good because many people do see graffiti as just vandalism.
I enjoy the images you have chosen, they are absolutely visually stimulating. Whatever you inevitably end up on I will most likely approve, Graffiti is one of my favorite art forms. It covers up blankness and exudes creativity and self expression, it is a wonder it isnt viewed differently in or society then it is.
The pictures are great to show your point. I like the first one the best. They will make a good argument that graffiti is not all bad.
Great idea. When the general public thinks about graffiti, they think of gang signs and trouble makers. There is another side to graffiti that people should know about: the art aspect. There are some truly remarkable images out there. Just because they were painted on the side of an abandoned building does not mean they are any less valuable than on a canvas.
These are all three visually interesting pictures of graffiti. I really like your argument. Maybe when you manipulate them you could tie the first picture with the other two more strongly.
I really like your idea for this project. When I think of graffiti, I think of it as art myself. However, I know a lot of people that think graffiti is bad and should be banned. A lot of people don’t categorize graffiti as art but some people do so I think you have something to work with here.
I like the concept, but I’d like to see good examples where the graffiti is definitely not vandalism of any kind.
I think this is an interesting idea. An artistic portrayal of art.
I like your idea to present graffiti as an art form. It raises some interesting questions, though. Graffiti is much less likely to be accepted in affluent neighborhoods than less affluent ones. Yet, the people who live in affluent neighborhoods arguably have a great deal of interest in art. They love having elaborately framed artworks hanging on their dining room walls. But don’t want to see art spray painted on the outside of stores when they visit their local malls. Why not?
Of course this is changing. There is the prime example of Basquiat. Many New York art lovers are actually buying entire walls of derelict buildings for the graffiti.
Very nice images. A part of me would advise you not to do use much manipulation. Alas, it is written into the assignment. However, I do think there are things you add without disrupting the natural appeal of your images. Perhaps you could photoshop in an antique looking frame. Or, perhaps you could minimize some of these images and place them in a gallery setting with other “masterpieces.” Or you could do the reverse and place “masterpieces” in the outdoor graffiti settings?
