Perception Through The Myst (Video Argument) – Final

December 3, 2009 Leave a comment

Here is the final version of my video argument. In this argument, I approached the topics of religion, science, mystery, and life. I did this by first coming up with a series of questions that asked individuals about their personal, religious, and scientific views and beliefs; their views on life, it’s mysteries and unanswered questions, and science. Originally my question list was a little too open to interpretation and because of that the answers we not exactly sufficient for the effect I wanted to get. I then revised my question list with a very precise vision in mind and made it so the questions flowed together well and created a concrete topic of interest/argument. I then interviewed four different people, all of whom have differing views and opinions and they provide very different elements to the video and argument. From all of the interviews, you can see that it truly is our beliefs and views that shape how we think and approach questions and mystery. Also, you can see that depending on someone’s religious and personal beliefs that determines whether they believe if they shape their lives. One thing that is common between all of the interviewees is that they all believe in free will and whether or not they believe in a higher power, they don’t believe that the higher power is omnipotent. This video accomplished all that I wanted it to, and it definitely shows a correlation between personal and spiritual beliefs and how we apply them to science, the unknown, and life and how that effects how it shapes people’s reality.

Video Proposals [UPDATE]

November 17, 2009 Leave a comment

I’ve been putting off posting my video proposal because I really didn’t know what I wanted to do at all, but I think I’ve narrowed it down to a few topics, and have actually taken footage for all the topics so I’m prepared to do whichever.

My possible topics are as follow:
1. Continuing what I argued with my visual essay, I thought I could do a video about the underground graffiti art scene that is captured throughout the city of Columbus, and how this is a viable and respectable medium for art.

2. Another topic I wanted to take a look at is college life. More specifically, how people go about their life away from “home” and how they spend their time at school and in their free time. Also, I’d like to take a look at what people think about college as part of their life. Is it just something you have to do? Is it something you should take in stride, take it slow, explore all your possibilities, or should you go in with a set plan, and finish within a certain amount of time, and join the “workforce” in a timely manner?

3. I also thought about doing something along the lines of how people perceive the mysteries of the world and how it shapes our reality.

[UPDATE]

After a few days of consideration, I have come to the decision that I am going to base my video argument on the mysteries and great questions of life (i.e., religion, history, myth, legends, conspiracies, etc.) and how people’s individual interpretations of such things shape our own realities. In doing this, I’m going to compile a list of said uncertainties, questions, and mysteries, and then interview individuals and get their take on each subject, then ask them how these things shape who they are, what they believe, what they do, etc.

Visual Argument – Final Draft

November 3, 2009 Leave a comment

Here is the final drafts of my Visual Argument. I tried to portray Graffiti and street art in a way that shows that they too are legitimate forms of art and expression and that they deserve more respect than they currently get. They way I try to argue this is by showing graffiti in not it’s usual environment, but in ways that more accepted forms of art are found in hopes of showing the audience that it too has just as much worth. I hope you enjoy it. Leave any comments or criticism, they are all appreciated.

Re: CopWatch

I very much enjoyed the CopWatch documentary video despite the problems I personally have with the message they try to convey. I believe the CopWatch documentary and the creator(s) has a very valid point to establish, but I think they go about it in the wrong way. Immediately as the video begins I found a problem with it, the fact that the woman starts off with saying that the basis of police forces is in racism and slavery. Now don’t get me wrong, I do acknowledge that there is an abundance of extremely unnecessary police brutality, and that even today there is racism which I believe by this point in history should not be a factor in society at all. We are all people, color does not matter, and I feel sorry for those who still are racist and hope that we can eventually get past it. Back to the video, I think that what the people who are making the documentary is extremely rude, ignorant, and disruptive to the police officers which they follow. Police officers are not inherently racist and brutal and I think that these people that follow them and try to catch that aspect of people only help to aid the stereotype and hinder police forces more than help them progress into a better system. Also, following these officers around not only puts the documenters in danger of getting caught up in something that they have no place in, but it distracts the officers from the objective of their duty, which is not to alienate people of a different color or to exude brutality, but to protect the citizens of the U.S. and to uphold the law.

Visual Argument – Rough pictures

October 20, 2009 17 comments

Here are the pictures I took for the early stages of the visual argument I am putting together. The purpose of this argument is to show how graffiti can be art as well and how the artist expresses themselves through this medium. I hope you enjoy the pictures. Please leave a comment with constructive criticism if you have something to say. I really look forward to getting into the heart of this project.

Audio Literacy Narrative (Written Draft)

September 29, 2009 Leave a comment

I just uploaded the written draft of my audio literacy narrative to the page of the same title here on the site. You can find the page on the navigation bar at the top of the site. I am also currently trying to upload the file to http://drop.io/ but am currently experiencing some problems, therefore I will update this post, and the ALN page with the link when I have it available. Keep in mind, when reading the draft, it is a rough copy. I already have plans to change it. I kind of scrambled to get an idea on a page before the deadline, and as I was writing it, especially towards the end, I kind of felt like I didn’t express my message well enough, and may want to go another way with the tone of the narrative. If and/or when I change it, I will make a post on the homepage of the site, and will put it up (along with a new link) on the ALN page as well. Let me know what you think in the comments section of either page and how I could make it better and wheter or not you find it interesting. Thanks for stopping by.

UPDATE: I now have a link to my audio literacy narrative written draft. It can be found here http://drop.io/mattromigalndraft. I have not updated it yet, but probably will before recording it. Thanks for the comments, they were very helpful.

Who I Am

September 29, 2009 Leave a comment

Hey everyone,
My name is Matthew Romig, you can call me Matt. I would like to tell you a little about myself. I grew up in many different towns in Northwest Ohio for much of my life, but I spent the most time, and my most recent years, in Lima, Ohio. I attended Bath High School in Lima. This is where I came to meet some of the best people I know, and where I truly defined myself. I love to play tennis, hang out with friends, watch movies and television, do just about anything on my computer, and be an all around tech geek. I completed my first year of college at The Ohio State University campus in Lima. I then decided to change majors from Biology (pre-med) to something a little more interesting (at least to me) and fun, Journalism. Along with switching majors, I switched campuses. I am now a full time student here at the OSU main campus in Columbus and I moved here with four of my closest friends, three of which I live with. So far I have had a great time in Columbus, I love my house, my classes, my friends, meeting new people, and just about everything else about this city. I look forward to my years to come here, and working my way towards a degree in Journalism. Thanks for taking the time to listen about myself and my life. I hope it was somewhat interesting and I hope that I can continue to produce new and interesting content for all who read this. In the meantime, take care and stop back.
